Job Description

Summary/Objective

The Maintenance Technician contributes to public health and sanitary conditions by providing an effective and efficient means of transporting liquid waste from users to the Wastewater Treatment Plant, and by operating and maintaining the wastewater collection system.

 

Essential Functions

  • Perform repair and maintenance activities on the wastewater collection system and locating facilities for protection during construction activities.
  • Assist with training for new sewer maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain extensive records regarding the wastewater collection.
  • Answer and respond to public and staff inquiries regarding sewers, manholes, utility locations, and other related items using telephone and two-way radio.
  • Protect the City’s utility assets and avoid damage during construction activities by providing utility location to other entities.
  • Perform repair and maintenance activities, including moving manhole covers, descending into confined spaces, moving debris with shovels and buckets, adjusting manholes rings and lids, and other manual activities.
  • Clean sewer pipelines with high pressure cleaner and assist with root control treatments to assure efficient operation of the collection system.

Other Duties

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with developers, plumbers, contractors, property owners, and other City employees.
  • Respond promptly to emergency callbacks during non-duty hours.
  • Assist supervisors and other departmental personnel in other projects for the benefit of the City and/or the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License

Preferred Education and Experience

  • One year experience in utility maintenance or construction related field.

Residency Requirement

  • Must reside within 25 miles of the city limits of Manhattan, Kansas

Salary/Pay

Starting Salary Range: $20.29 - $24.36/hour, Depending on Qualifications
