Job Description

Summary/Objective

Assists the Maintenance Crew Leader in contributing to public health and fire protection by providing an effective and efficient distribution pipe system for potable water for domestic use and for firefighting purposes by repairing and maintaining the system.

 

Essential Functions

•Perform installation repair, and maintenance functions on the water distribution system, including pipelines, valves, fire hydrants, water services, meters, and other related equipment.

•Operate pipe-tapping machines for the installation of new water services.

•Answer and respond to public and staff inquiries regarding water mains, service lines, valves, fire hydrants, and other related items using telephone and two-way radios.

•Repair water leaks, water main breaks, and fire hydrants using repair clamps, pipe couplings, cast iron pipefitting, ductile iron pipe, and other repair materials.

•Maintain extensive records regarding the water distribution system.

•Work with developers, plumbers, contractors, and property owners on repairs, relocations, and new water service and water main installations, maintaining a cordial and effective working relationship.

Supervisory Responsibilities (if applicable)

•May supervise other water distribution personnel in absence of the Maintenance Crew Leader and Equipment Operator.

 

Other Duties

•Provide training for new water distribution personnel.

•Identify needed improvements in water distribution infrastructure.

•Assist supervisors and other departmental personnel in other projects for the benefit of the City and/or the department.

•Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

• Valid driver’s license.

• Successful candidate must obtain and maintain a valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (Class A - Air brakes and tanker) within 90 days of employment.

 

Preferred Education and Experience

• Two years of experience in utility maintenance or construction related field

 

Additional Requirements

• Must reside within 25-mile radius of the respective Public Works shops for the purpose of responding to call backs and after-hours or on-call duty.

Salary/Pay

Starting Salary Range: $20.29 - $24.36/hour, Depending on Qualifications
