Job Description

This position develops and coordinates the safety training for KDOT District personnel following administrative policies, existing Federal and State laws and regulations. The Safety Specialist also inspects and provides consultative work in occupational safety and highway work zone safety, and samples and inputs analytical results for environmental compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Two year's work experience in occupational safety programs.
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
  • Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment. 
  • Ability to complete and pass OSHA 500 and 501 certifications. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of OSHA and other safety standards and corrective techniques.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to convey information to employees.
  • Ability to develop solutions to complex environmental, health and safety issues.
  • Working knowledge of the Kansas Department of Transportation rules and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Three years of experience in safe work practices, accident prevention, industrial hygiene, or related field.

Job Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts safety inspections of district work sites to comply with KDOT SOM's and Federal safety and health regulations and provides assistance to ensure worker safety.
  • Prepares, conducts, and/or monitors workplace safety health, equipment environmental training/education, and/or weekly safety meetings for district employees. This position also schedules and provides annual, biannual, or as required KDOT SOM's and Federal Safety & Health training with employees from the district/area/subarea offices.
  • Promotes and facilitates KDOT environmental compliance and guidance with local, state, and federal regulations, writes permits for Special Waste Disposal and Hazardous Waste Generation Forms, and determines compliance with local, state, and federal waste regulations (RCRA guidelines).
  • Identifies and provides technical assistance in the identification and removal of hazardous conditions and substances for KDOT employees, conducts special assignments, and aids in the recognition, evaluation, and control of those environmental stresses in the workplace. 
  • Provides guidance in establishing and enhancing Accident Prevention Programs, including duties such as reviewing personal injury and preventable vehicular/equipment damage reports, determining cause and recommending preventative measures, conveying findings in a written report and discussing with supervisory personnel at regular intervals, and keeping OSHA 300 logs and associated accident logs up to date. This position also serves as a member of the District Accident Review Committee and performs the duties of the District Radiological Defense System (RADEF) Officer.
  • Tracks employee Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) expenditures and training expenses and negotiates competitive bid pricing with vendors. 
  • Attends training sessions, seminars and conferences to maintain certifications and improve expertise due to changing technology and changes in rules and regulations.

Salary/Pay

  • Annual Salary Range:  $41,870.40 - $50,918.40
  • Hourly Pay Range:  $20.13 - $24.48
