Job Description

Job Brief:  

  • Be the first smile a student sees at the beginning of the school day and the last smile a student sees to end their school day! USD 383 is hiring School Bus Drivers to join our team. Drivers are an essential team member that transports students to and from school and extracurricular events while ensuring student safety. A School Bus Driver’s responsibility include making sure that their vehicle is in good shape and observing safety and traffic rules while on the road. This is an ideal opportunity for retirees, veterans, and people needing a flexible schedule. Full-time and part-time job opportunities are available. 

Location: USD 383 Transportation Department. 

Hours Per Day: 

  • Mornings - 6:00am – 9:00am. 
  • Afternoons - 2:00pm – 5:00 pm. 
  • Possible additional hours with field trips, after-school events, and/or athletics. 
  • 6 hours a day/30 hours a week minimum. 

Days Per Year: 

  • Position available during the regular school year. 
  • Options for summer employment.

Qualifications:

Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma/GED. 
  • Must be at least 20 years of age with an exemplary driving record. 
  • Must be able to acquire a CDL license with P and S endorsement. 
  • Must complete Standard First Aid, CPR for Adult, Child and Infants, and Defensive Driving courses. 
  • Must be able to pass endurance test and lift/drag 75 pounds. 
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test and are subject to random drug testing. 
  • Must pass a DOT physical examination upon hiring and every 2 years after. 
  • All USD 383 employees must pass a background check. 
  • Must hold a valid drivers license for 12 months and pass MVR check.

Job Responsibilities

Job Duties: 

  • Must enjoy being around students and be patient, attentive and have excellent decision-making skills. 
  • Ability to work individually or with a bus monitor. 
  • Communicate effectively with other education professionals like teachers, principals, other transportation staff and dispatchers. 
  • Obey and observe all traffic laws. 
  • Follow assigned schedule for routes. 
  • Maintain discipline with students on the bus and report any misconduct. 
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-town school activity trips. 
  • Check the bus before starting routes/activity for mechanical issues. 
  • Transport authorized passengers only. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

Salary/Pay

Salary: 

  • $9.75/hour during 5-week training period. 
  • $17.50/hour after training is complete.
