At Manhattan Tech, student success doesn’t happen by chance. Behind every test, every resume, and every graduation moment, there is a network of support that helps students stay on track. Much of that support begins in the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC).
For nearly two decades, Darren, Director of the TLC, has helped shape that support into what it is today. From tutoring and testing services to study workshops and accommodations, the TLC is designed to give every student the tools they need to succeed.
A Place Built for Students
The TLC is more than a quiet place to study. It is where students find help when they need it most. The center offers tutoring for math, writing, and general education courses, as well as resume writing and proofreading support. Students can schedule private study rooms, access database and research help, or get one-on-one instruction on using college systems like MATConline, Canvas, and Outlook.
The TLC also manages Achievement Center testing services, providing make-up exams, academic accommodations, and other testing support to help students complete their coursework successfully.
Darren says the goal is simple: “We want to remove as many barriers as possible. If a student is struggling, we find a way to support them so they can move forward.”
Meeting Students Where They Are
The TLC’s reach extends far beyond its walls. Darren frequently visits classrooms to offer study skills workshops and tailored sessions based on student needs. These workshops cover everything from test preparation and time management to building stronger writing habits.
Faculty and staff also rely on the TLC for collaboration and guidance on academic accommodations, ensuring every student has the opportunity to learn and perform at their best.
A Legacy of Support
When Darren joined Manhattan Tech in 2005, tutoring was limited and academic support was primarily focused on nursing students. Over time, he helped expand the TLC’s services to reach every program across campus.
“We started with math and writing,” Darren recalls, “and grew from there. Students needed help with more than just assignments—they needed confidence, structure, and someone in their corner.”
That commitment has made a lasting difference. Today, the TLC supports every program area, helping reduce attrition and increase student success across campus.
Looking Ahead
As Manhattan Tech continues to grow, Darren hopes the TLC will expand its reach even further. His vision includes more advanced workshops, career development opportunities, and continued integration with Adult Education to help students transition smoothly into college-level coursework.
“The best part of my job is watching students reach their goals,” Darren says. “Seeing them walk across that stage at commencement reminds me why we do what we do.”
Whether students need help with a class, guidance on a resume, or just a quiet place to focus, the Teaching and Learning Center is here to help them get there.
