The Grind: From GED to HVAC

How Jonathan Nunez Built Momentum and a Future at Manhattan Tech

In the spring of 2025, Jonathan Nunez earned his GED. By August, he had taken another major step forward by enrolling in Manhattan Tech’s HVAC program. Today, he is building practical skills, confidence, and a career path he once was not sure he would reach.

Inspired by Family and a Fresh Start

Jonathan’s motivation began close to home. When his younger brother graduated high school and enrolled at Manhattan Tech, it sparked something in him.

“Seeing my little brother go straight to college motivated me,” he said. “It made me want to move forward too.”

With several family members already connected to the college, Jonathan felt a sense of familiarity and belonging from the start. What he needed next were the tools and encouragement to turn that motivation into progress.

Support That Made a Difference

Jonathan describes Manhattan Tech’s Adult Education program as welcoming and supportive.

“All the teachers made it easy to ask questions,” he said. “It was always a safe place to learn and get help.”

He credits the consistency and encouragement from instructors with helping him stay focused, even on tougher days. He also points to the steady support he received from his advisor, Beth.

“She never gave up on me,” Jonathan said. “None of you did. That really helped.”

Discovering HVAC and Building Career Skills

As Jonathan explored career options, HVAC quickly stood out. He has always enjoyed understanding how things work and wanted hands on skills he could use both on the job and at home.

“If something breaks, I want to know what I’m talking about,” he said. “HVAC felt like something I could really do.”

After reviewing program options with Beth, HVAC felt like the right fit. Early in the program, he found the textbook-based portions helpful and looked forward to applying what he learned. As labs and practical activities increased, so did his confidence.

The math skills he developed while earning his GED have carried over into the HVAC program. Concepts and vocabulary from science courses have also helped him better understand technical material.

A Growing Sense of Confidence

Earning his GED and moving directly into a technical program gave Jonathan a clearer sense of direction. He now sees a path toward a stable, in demand career.

“I feel like my future is brighter now,” he said. “I can see where I’m going, and I know I’m making progress.”

Jonathan encourages others who are considering the GED to take the first step.

“Just do it,” he said. “Once you get it, more doors open. Jobs, schooling, everything.”

For those thinking about a technical program, his advice is simple.

“If your teachers give you something that helps you learn, take it. This is the best place to practice before you’re out in the field.”

Looking Ahead

Jonathan is grateful for his instructors and the support he has received at Manhattan Tech.

“A few years ago, I didn’t think any of this was possible,” he said. “Now I know it is.”

His story reflects steady progress, determination, and the impact of supportive education. For students considering the GED or a technical program, Jonathan’s journey shows what can happen when the right opportunity meets the decision to move forward.
