Requires one of the following conditions; Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) oversight:

Does not have a high school diploma; and has not passed all four modules of the GED® Exam
Does not have basic, reading, writing, or math skills as determined by scores on the TABE tests

Underage students (16 & 17 year olds) must present documentation at the time of enrollment to show they are not truant and/or currently enrolled in high school. Any one of the following may be used as documentation:

A Disclaimer form and an Exemption form from the local high school showing the student has been legally withdrawn from high school
A court order exempting the student from attending school
Proof of enrollment in a board-approved alternative educational program
Proof of legal emancipation
Proof of marriage

Below are the steps to apply to the Manhattan Tech Adult Education program for General Education Equivalency (GED) and/or English Language Learner (ELL) courses.

COMPLETE THE ADULT EDUCATION APPLICATION

Create an account and submit the Adult Education Application, along with either a waiver code or the required fee. After you submit your application, please allow about 30 minutes for your checklist to update.

Steps for Setting Up an Admission Application Account

1. Go to the Application Portal

Visit the Manhattan Tech application portal: engage.manhattantech.edu/apply

You’ll see two options:

First Time Users
Returning Users

2. Create Your Engage Account

If you’ve never started a Manhattan Tech application before, select: First Time Users – Create an Account

Enter:

Your name
A personal email address (not your school email, not a Manhattan Tech email)
Your date of birth
A password you will remember

Once you submit the form, you will be emailed a confirmation pin. Open that email and enter the pin to activate your account.

3. Log In to Engage Portal

After activating your account:

Return to engage.manhattantech.edu/apply
Select Returning Users – Log In
Enter your email and password

You will now be logged into your Slate status portal.

4. Start Your Application

Once logged in:

Select Start a New Application
Choose the appropriate application based upon applicant type
Complete all required fields
Submit your application

Make sure all information is accurate—especially your name. Whatever you enter on your application becomes the official name on your Manhattan Tech account.

After submitting, your status portal will show:

RESET MANHATTAN TECH PASSWORD

Once you’re accepted into a session, you’ll receive an email from Manhattan Tech with instructions to reset your Manhattan Tech account password. Please complete this step before attending orientation.

Welcome Email from Adult Education

You will receive an email from adulted@manhattantech.edu with next steps. This message will also include details about the upcoming orientation - which you must attend in order to join the program.

The Adult Education grant program is unable to provide free services to F1 and J1 visa holders. Please see the Eligibility section for more details.

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older at the time of registration.
Applicants must attend ALL DAYS of orientation.
GED applicants under 18 years of age must provide official documentation of school withdrawal.
You can submit this documentation with the students application or drop them off at the welcome desk inside our Manhattan campus main building.
All new students must register online and GED Students must bring government issued photo ID.
- ID must show your picture, birthday, and have your signature
Children are not allowed to be in orientation, testing, or classes.
If there is no availability in an existing class, your name will be placed on a waiting list for another class.

Program Orientation

Before beginning classes, all students attend a required program orientation. Orientation helps us understand your goals and ensure you are placed in the classes that best support your success.

During orientation, you will:

Complete placement assessments in Math and Reading so instructors can determine your current skill level
Learn about the structure of the program and class expectations
Receive information about campus resources and student support services
Meet staff who will help guide you through the program
Have an opportunity to ask questions and get assistance with account setup or student email access

Orientation may also include a brief campus tour and an overview of the teaching and learning center and available study resources.

Following orientation, students will be placed into appropriate preparation classes based on their assessment results.

After submitting your application, our Adult Education team will contact you by email and/or phone with the specific orientation date, time, and location, along with instructions on what to bring.

GED Test

The GED® test is made up of 4 subjects, broken into separate exams. You don’t have to take all 4 tests at once - you can space them out however it suits you and go at your own pace. Setup an account at GED.com to prepare for and schedule to take your tests.

Student Guidance: Understanding your rights and resources if contacted by ICE

You have the right to remain silent.
1. If ICE agents come to your door, you are not required to answer their questions. You have the right to remain silent. You may say, “I am exercising my right to remain silent and would like to speak with my attorney.”
You have the right to ask for identification.
1. ICE officers must identify themselves and show their badges if they are at your door. You can ask to see their identification before engaging with them. If they refuse to show their identification, you are under no obligation to open the door.
You do not have to let ICE in without a warrant.
1. You are not required to open the door unless ICE has a warrant signed by a judge. If the officers claim they have a warrant, ask them to slide it under the door or hold it up to the window so you can examine it. Make sure the warrant is signed by a judge and specifies the address where they are authorized to search.
2. If the ICE agents do not have a valid warrant, you can refuse entry. Politely say, “I do not consent to your entry,” and do not open the door.
You have the right to call an attorney.
1. If you are detained or questioned by ICE, you have the right to contact an attorney. It is crucial that you do not sign anything or make any decisions without consulting an attorney.
2. When you call an attorney, let them know it pertains to a detained client, so they are able to handle the call adequately.
Stay calm and document the encounter.
1. If ICE comes to your door, try to stay calm and avoid confrontation. You can also record the interaction if it is safe to do so, as long as it does not interfere with their activities. This documentation can be useful if there are any legal issues or concerns later on.
If you are arrested, you have the right to know why.
1. If ICE arrests you, they must tell you the reason for the arrest. You also have the right to know what charges you are facing and may request a hearing before an immigration judge.
Know the rights of family members.
1. If you have family members in your home, know that they also have rights. They do not have to answer questions from ICE, and they also do not have to open the door without a warrant.

Child Care Aware of Kansas

Child Care Resource & Referral agencies (CCR&Rs) help families find child care and assist child care providers with resources for their business.

Department for Children and Families (DCF)

Provides Food Stamps, applications for KanCare Medicaid for families and elderly/ disabled individuals, child care assistance, cash assistance and additional non-agency information. Vocational Rehabilitation to help disabled adults to find employment. Adult and children protective services.

Riley County Family & Child Resource Center

Resource center for Riley county including information and support for issues like child care subsidies, Parents as Teachers, WIC, Healthy Start, public health education, information on immunizations, etc.

Court-Appointed Special Advocates are local volunteers who help advocate for abused / neglected children in the court system.

The USD 383 FIT Closet & Clothing Exchange exists to serve students within our school district who are struggling with homelessness and/or poverty.

Before school, after school, during the summer months and on Friday nights, the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan engages members in fun and educational activities that help develop a sound moral compass and influence their ability to succeed in life.

Thrive!

Thrive! is working to reduce poverty by building skills and relationships that strengthen families and individuals. After an initial 10-week training, individuals living in poverty are matched with volunteers from the community to work as a team for 18 months to build the resources needed to improve their lives. The entire family is part of the process. Quality youth programming and a meal are also part of our weekly meetings.

Financial & Legal Resources

Fairy Godmothers Fund

Provides flexible accessible monies to improve the health and well being of area women 18 years of age and older. Maximum grant amount is $800. The recipients are asked to help someone else in the future through a pay-itforward principle.

Guardians

Providing access to funds for men with limited resources and immediate financial needs within the greater Manhattan area. They provide access to funds for essential services not met by traditional funding sources.

Housing and Credit Counseling Inc.

Provides counseling which is approved by HUD and regulated by the Office of the Kansas Bank Commissioner. A local, trusted source for: student loan repayment and consolidation, credit building and reports, debt repayment (including medical), budgeting, mortgage default, bankruptcy, and reverse mortgage.

Kansas Legal Services

Provides free legal assistance to low income Kansas for various general civil legal issues where housing, income and family relationships need to be protected. Persons who are victims of crime and/or abused who are at risk for losing housing, income and/ or family relationships receive priority assistance. Generally there is no charge for legal services.

Shepherd's Crossing

Provides financial assistance with utility bills, rent, and prescription drugs.

Counseling Resources

Crisis Center Inc.

Provides confidential, round the clock services to victims of sexual or domestic violence. Services include crisis intervention, supportive counseling, advocacy, and safe shelter.

Morning Star Inc

Provides mental health recovery services and programs on a walk in basis. Programs include peer run activities geared to help connect members to others and their community.

Pawnee Mental Health Services

Licensed mental health and licensed substance abuse center providing services in ten north central Kansas counties, including Riley County. Counseling services for adults, children, and families. Services include individual and group therapy, substance abuse programs, Batters Intervention Program, Alcohol and Drug Information classes, psychological testing, medication evaluation and management, psychosocial rehabilitation groups, Mental Health First Aid classes, Parenting Workshops, and Employee Assistance Program.
