JOB TITLE:  School Nurse

JOB BRIEF:

  • The School Nurse is responsible for promoting and protecting the health and well-being of students through direct care, health education, and coordination of health services. This role ensures compliance with state laws and district policies, supports early identification of health concerns, and serves as a liaison between students, families, staff, and healthcare providers.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal/District Head Nurse.

  • District provided devices - iPad, laptop and/or desktop for certified staff.  

PAID COLLABORATION TIME.   

FSLA STATUS: Non-Exempt.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board of Education’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid RN license in the state of Kansas.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Experience in pediatric or community health nursing preferred.
  • Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • All USD 383 employees must pass a background check.

Job Responsibilities

JOB DUTIES:

  • Coordinate health screenings and referrals for students in need of medical or dental care.
  • Organize and conduct programs for early identification of health concerns (e.g., vision, hearing, and general wellness screenings).
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date cumulative health records for all students, including immunization documentation, while ensuring confidentiality of all health information.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care for illness or injury during the school day.
  • Administer prescribed medications and provide regular, ongoing care for students with individual health needs.
  • Communicate with parents, staff, and healthcare providers regarding student health issues, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
  • Serve as a health resource on wellness, disease prevention, and management of chronic conditions.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and teaching and learning personnel to integrate health education and promote safe, health-conscious school environments.
  • Advise staff on health-related accommodations or program modifications to support individual student needs.
  • Ensure compliance with state laws and district policies related to school health.
  • Assist school personnel in maintaining safe and healthy school conditions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
